Tools has been cleverly carving a name for himself in the East Coast scene for a few years with a succession of well received mixtapes. He is a massive contribution to the new Hardtimes Records release ‘Rotten Apple Dreams’ and has his own debut album ‘Crushed Ice’ is due for release soon with the single ‘Are We There Yet’ is getting love from DJ’s in the USA, Europe and the UK. Jonathan Miles went to find out more from this New York rapper…

What’s up Tools. Hope you are good. How’s life in the Big Apple?

Whattup Jonathon! Well when I am in the Big Apple, life is good. Grindin, and more grindin, my Hardtimes Fam definitely holds me down. I am all over the East Coast though, from V.A to M.A to D.C to Philly! I’m all over, chasing this reality.

You are signed with Hardtimes Records. When and how did that happen?

I have been Hardtimes from when they started, so I don’t even look at it a business only situation. To me it’s more like a family. We started this thing together so I’ve always been a part of it and always will be.

Let’s talk about your previous releases. What have you dropped so far and where can people get them?

Well I’ve appeared on several mixtapes, compilations and albums, but recently I’ve dropped two mixtapes ‘Precious Metals’ and ‘Tha Carter III Invasion’. Right now it’s all about my first solo album ‘Crushed Ice’. I also have the next mixtape called ‘Fresh 2 Life’ dropping in September. www.HardtimesRecords.com is where you can go to pick up all of my releases.

The mixtape that Hardtimes Records have done with Late & Tricksta from Wolftown & Rago Magazine is big! How did that come about?

Yo Late & Tricksta, Rago, Wolftown, is family!!! It’s almost ten years since we been getting down with each other. It was long overdue so we had to get it popping! ‘Rotten Apple Dreams’ is hosted by me, Famoso & PR Dean. The project is pure fire, Late & Tricksta killet on the mixtape for real. Wolftown what’s popping family? Hope the UK loves the mixtape because in our eyes it’s a classic! .

What can people expect from that release?

Well they can expect a lot of intensely unique and spectacular Hip-Hip music. It’s a compilation mixtape with all my Hardtimes army. It’s dope to be underground; I would call it under water.

You seem to have a real international appeal with the label Hardtimes. Was it a conscious decision to reach out overseas with your music?

Well in all actually I am originally from overseas, born and raised in West Africa in a country called Liberia but really I always do my music to appeal to any and everybody no mater where you’re from as long as you can appreciate great Hip-Hop music then my music is sculptured for you. I inspire to be one of the best and that’s not possible if I can only reach one type of location of people, plus the way I live, act and love is how my music is… international!!!

The single ‘Are We There Yet’ is nice. Who produced that and you ever thought of doing a video to that track?

Thank you Jonathon! That track was produced by Live! A producer that I have worked with my whole career. His style is just versatile as mine so we’ve complimented each other very well.

So will there be any more singles before the album drops?

Yes, there’s also the tracks ‘Whats Da Prob’ and ‘Tango’ both produced by Solo Sounds.

Do you have a release date for the ‘Crushed Ice’ album?

My official release date is August 25th 2009.

I hear there are some heavy collaborations on the album too. Who features and who’s done the beats?

On the album I got Sha Stimuli, Block McCloud from Brooklyn, AC, Termanology, Abdi, Nina B and of course my Hardtimes and Beastly fam. Production by Thorotracks, Undefined, Live!, Peoples, Solo Sounds and couple more.

How would you describe the album?

I would say ‘Crushed Ice’ is like a fresh new face to Hip-Hop. It’s versatile, real, well produced with ill word play. You can’t go wrong!
